愛猫は、歯磨き好きですか？
この質問にほとんどの人は「嫌い」と答えるのではないでしょうか？
猫も口内ケアが大切だということを書きました。
2歳までの猫の約70％が歯周環境に問題があるといわれています。
でも歯磨きは嫌がってさせていくれない猫が多いですよね。
そこでちょっとでもできるようなるためのアドバイスを書きます。

猫は虫歯になるの？
猫は虫歯にはなりにくいですが、歯石、歯垢から病気になってしまうことがあるので、歯磨きはとても大切。
歯とお口のケアは、大切な健康管理のひとつ！
猫は人より歯垢がたまりやすく、お口の健康課題も多いので、歯みがき習慣をつけて、口内を清潔に保ちましょう。
そもそも猫に歯磨きは必要なの？
「野生の猫は歯磨きしてないよ。」と思われるかもしれません。
野生のネコ科動物は肉食のため、肉を引きちぎることで歯の表面の汚れが取れるし、
あまり噛まずに飲み込むことが多いので、肉片が口の中に残りにくく、歯のトラブルが少ないと言われています。
一方、ペットの猫は、主食がキャットフードが多く、
細かく、柔らかくなりやすいペットフードは、肉に比べて食べカスが残りやくなっています。
カリカリよりもウェットの方がカスも残りやすいです。
放置すると歯垢や歯石となって、歯肉炎や歯周炎などのいわゆる「歯周病」の原因になります。

歯の構成
歯は大きく分けると、3層から成り立っています。
表面の「エナメル質」
その下の「象牙質」
神経や血管などが集中する「歯髄」
また、よく目にする「歯周」とは、いわゆる歯を取り巻く組織のことで、「歯肉」「歯槽骨（しそうこつ）」「歯根膜（しこんまく）」「セメント質」から構成されています。
歯と歯肉の境目には、数ミリの溝（歯周ポケット）があります。
ここに歯垢（プラーク）がたまると歯肉など歯周組織の炎症を引き起こします。これが歯周病です。
また、歯垢は放っておくとどんどん硬くなってしまいます。これが歯石です。
歯磨きからはいつから始めたらいい？
大人になってから歯磨きを始めるのは大変、というケースが多いので、子猫のうちに慣らしておくといいです。
永久歯が生えそろう生後4～6ヶ月ごろまでには慣らしておきたいところですが大人になってからもできないわけではないです。
歯磨きのやり方とコツ
いきなり歯ブラシで磨くのは難しいので、少しずつ時間をかけて慣らしましょう。
コツは無理せず、猫が嫌がるならすぐに止めてください。
歯ブラシの使い方
歯ブラシは、ヘッドが小さいものを選び、毛がやわらいものがおすすめです。（特にペット用のものでなくても大丈夫です）
歯ブラシは歯の根元部分に対しておよそ45度の角度で当て、
小刻みに揺らすようにして磨きましょう。
歯ブラシが歯肉に当たって傷つけてしまうこともあるので、力を入れすぎないように十分注意してください。
頻度はどのぐらい？
食べ物のかすが歯に残り（食物残渣：しょくもつざんさ）、それが歯垢となり、３日以内に歯石になると言われています。
一度歯石になってしまうと、歯磨きでは取り除くことができなくなってしまうため、食物残渣や歯垢でいる間に除去することが重要！
そのため、できれば毎日歯磨きができるとベスト。
それが無理でも、2～3日に１回はケアすることをおすすめします。
歯磨きを嫌がる猫の５ステップ
猫ちゃんが歯磨きを嫌がっているのに無理やり行うのは、かえって歯磨き嫌いにしてしまいます。
スローステップで気長にできるようにしましょう
ステップ１ 口を触れるように
まずは口の周りを触られるように。
鼻先から耳の方にゆっくりと撫でる（ストローク）する。
これは、プレイスタッチ®︎のマズルのストロークです。
口元は感情をつかさどるところなので、
感情が安定したり、鳴きぐせがある猫、拾い癖のある猫に有効です。
口元を触るときは、深い呼吸を！
浅い呼吸は、緊張をあらわすので、愛猫に緊張がうつってしまします。
ステップ２ 歯を触れるように
口の外側が触れるようになったら、次は歯を触れるように。
いっぺんに全部の歯は難しいと思うので、まずは、犬歯のみ。
犬歯は、あまり触っても感じないと言われています。
犬歯が触れるようになったら他の歯もチャレンジ！！
ステップ３ 歯茎を触れるように
歯が触られるようになったら、次は歯茎。
歯茎を時計まわりに優しくマッサージをするように。
急に奥は嫌がるので前歯から焦らずゆっくりと慣らさせてください。
ステップ４ ガーゼで磨く
ガーゼなど指に巻きつけて、ステップ１から挑戦してください。
ステップ５ 歯ブラシで磨く
ステップ５までできた場合は、いよいよ歯ブラシで！
手に歯ブラシなどを持ちながらステップ１のマズルのストローク。
歯ブラシを持った手に慣れさせてください。
歯ブラシを持って口周りが触れるようになれば、
ステップ２にうつってください。
ポイント
歯ブラシに猫が好きなおやつをつけてなめさせる、
歯ブラシを持つ手におやつを隠しておくなど、
まずは「歯ブラシ＝いいこと」と教えてください。
なるべくストレスが少ない方法で時間をかけて歯磨きを習慣化してあげてください。
どうしても歯ブラシが苦手
それでも歯ブラシが苦手であれば、ガーゼや市販の歯磨きシートで歯を磨いたり、飲み水に混ぜて使う液体歯磨きなども販売されています。
デンタルケアトリーツが市販されています。
毎日のおやつに取り入れてみるとよいでしょう。
一方で、歯に良いからといって与えすぎると今度は体重オーバーの心配が出てきますので、適正な量を守ってあげてくださいね。
その場合も原材料などチャックは忘れずに！
歯磨きおもちゃ（歯磨きトイ）
楽しく遊ばせながらついでに歯のケアもできてしまう、一石二鳥の機能性おもちゃも多数販売されています。
ヘチマやまゆ玉、マイクロファイバーなど、猫が噛みついたときに歯の表面の汚れを拭き取ってくれる素材が使用されています。
ちぎれた欠片を誤飲しないよう、強度の高いものを選んであげてください。
人用の歯磨き粉は使っていい？
人用の歯磨き粉を猫に使うのは控えましょう。
人用の歯磨き粉の中には、「キシリトール」が配合されているものがあります。
キシリトールは人の歯のケアによいと言われていますが、
犬が大量摂取した場合はインスリンが大量に分泌されることで低血糖症になり、
最悪命に関わることがあるとされています。
猫に犬と同様の症状が現れるのかはっきりとしたことは言えませんが、与えないに越したことはないでしょう。
万が一人用の歯磨き粉を舐めてしまった場合、体調に変化はないか観察し、気になることがあれば、すぐに獣医師に診てもらってください。
歯石がついてしまったら？
歯石を取りのぞくには、歯科医が使用する「スケーラー」という先の尖った器具で削り落とす方法が一般的です。
しかし、専門的な器具である上、とがった先端で口腔内を傷つけてしまったり、歯の表面を削ることでかえって歯石が付きやすい状態になってしまうこともあります。
飼い主さんが行うのは難しいでしょう。動物病院で歯石除去する場合は、全身麻酔をした上で、スケーリングなどの処置を行います。
