カーミングシグナルは、昨日お伝えしたボディランゲージのひとつです。
私は、このカーミングシグナルを知って、「犬はなんて平和主義者なんだろう！」と感動しました。

カーミングシグナルとは
カーミングシグナルはノルウェーの動物学者であるテゥーリッド・ルーガス氏（Turid Rugaas）が提唱し、現在27個以上あります。
Calming Signalの「Calming」は”落ち着かせる”
「Signal」は”信号”との意味です。
Calming Signalは「自分と相手を落ち着かせるための合図」「敵意がないことを示す」などといった意味を持っています。

私たちがカーミングシグナルを理解することで、
犬が抱えているストレスや不安を早期に解決することが可能になります。
双方のコミュニケーションになるので、犬との信頼関係を強く結ぶことができます。
カーミングシグナルを理解しないデメリット
カーミングシグナルは、犬たちの不快や不安を表しています。
気付けないことで大きなストレスを与える結果となることもあります。
一生懸命、表現しているのに理解してもらえないと
表現しなくなってしまいます。

どんなときにカーミングシグナルを使うの？
カーミングシグナルを提唱したテゥーリッド・ルーガス氏は、
「犬をより深く理解するために、カーミングシグナルの意味、そして、犬がシグナルをどのように使用するか理解しなくてはならない」と言っています。
カーミングシグナルは、小さい仕草であったり、素早い仕草であることが多いので見逃してしまいがちです。
また、同じシグナルであっても状況によって意味が異なることがあります。
犬たちがどのようなときにカーミングシグナルを使うかを知ることで、読み取るチャンスを見逃さなくなります。

- 他の犬に安心感を与え、友好的であることを伝えたいとき
- 他者に落ち着いて欲しいとき
- 人や犬からの脅威を避けたいとき
- 不安、恐怖、喧嘩、不快なことを鎮めたいとき

カーミングシグナルはいつからはじまる？
カーミングシグナルは、世界中すべての犬に生まれつき備わっている能力です。
生まれたばかりの子犬は、自分の意志で自由に体を動かすことが出来ないため、多種類のカーミングシグナルを使うことができません。
唯一出せるシグナルは「あくび」と言われています。
ただ、ストレスが大きい環境に置かれたり、
シグナルを出しても気づかれず、無視され続けることで、その能力が失われることがあります。
カーミングシグナルは犬の心の声です。
その想いを読み解いてあげる知識と能力が私たちには必要です。
カーミングシグナルの科学的検証について
カーミングシグナルは、最近までその内容が科学的に検証されたことはなかったそうです。
先ごろ、イタリアのピサ大学獣医科学科の研究チームにより、『犬同士における視覚コミュニケーションの分析～カーミングシグナルについての予備的研究』というレポートが発表されました。
今回発表されたのは予備研究の結果であり、明確な結論を出すにはまだ多くのデータと統計が必要であるとされていますが、ルーガス氏の経験に基づく『カーミングシグナル』は確かに相手を落ち着かせる働きがあるとの科学的裏付けが取れそうとのことです。
