ストレスに継続的にさらされると様々なこころの病気になることがあります。
放っておくと症状がエスカレートし、症状が重いとお薬による治療が必要になってきます。
最近増えている代表的なこころの病気をご紹介します。
分離不安
動物が愛着を感じているものから離されて、一人になると強い不安を感じ様々な問題行動を起こします。
通常はご家族の外出時の留守番やそのことが予測されたときに症状が現れやすいです。
症状は、軽度なものから深刻なものまで様々。
症状
- 落着きがなくなる
- 破壊行動を行う
- 吠える、ずっと吠える
- 不適切な場所での排泄
- 家の中のものを壊す
- 食事を食べない・下痢・嘔吐
- 震える
- 手足をなめる
- トレイの失敗
普段からご家族のあとについて歩くワンちゃんは要注意！
また、外出を阻止しようと攻撃的になることもあります。
不安傾向が強くなる原因
- 留守番に馴れていない
- ご家族のライフスタイルが変化し、今までよりも長時間の留守番が必要になった
- ご家族が在宅時に強い愛情表現をすることで留守中と在宅時の違いが強調される
- 動物が高齢
対処法
- 外出時や帰宅時に声をすぐに掛けたり触ったりしない
- 留守番の練習をする
- 留守中に楽しく過ごせるよう工夫する
- ご家族が在宅時でも、ワンちゃんや猫ちゃんが一人でいる時間を作る
分離不安にならないために留守番の練習や一人でも楽しく過ごせる工夫をしてあげることがとても大切になります。
常同障害（強迫性障害）
不安障害のひとつで、ストレスがたまったり、どうしたらいいのかわからなくなった時、全く関係のない行動を繰り返したりします。
中には行動を何もしなくなることもあります。
繰り返し行動をすることでストレス解消をしているのです。
一時的ですぐに行動が改善されれば問題ないのですが、継続的なストレス状態にさらされているとこの行動がエスカレートして常同障害となります。
症状
- 尾を追いかけてぐるぐる回る（尾追い）
- 足先をなめる
- 穴を掘る
- 歩きまわる
- 光を追う動きをする
これらの症状が悪化すると、尾をうなりながら追いかけ回り続け自分で尾を咬みちぎってしまったり、足をなめすぎて赤く腫れあがり出血したりします（自傷行為）。
ストレスの原因
原因は様々ですが、退屈・不安・環境の変化・コミュニケーション不足・環境刺激の不足（ずっとケージに入れられているなど）などからおこることが知られています。
動物園のオリの中でうろうろ動き回っているライオンなどのネコ科の動物を見ることがあると思いますがこれがまさにそうです。
退屈で仕方ないのです。
対処法
ストレスの原因を探し、出来るだけ改善できるように工夫をしてあげましょう。
例えば、犬であれば退屈しないようにコング（穴におやつを詰め長時間犬が遊べるようにするおもちゃ）などを与えるのもおすすめです。
叱ると逆効果（症状が悪化する）になるので気を付けましょう。
また、他の病気が隠れている可能性があるので症状が気になるようであれば早めの診察をお勧めします。
恐怖症
雷や花火などの大きな音や動物病院やドライブなど特定の場所や状況に動物が過剰な恐怖反応を示すことを言います。
症状
- 呼吸が粗くなる
- そわそわする
- 震える
- 体が硬直する
- 隠れる
- 吠える
- 破壊行動
- 排泄
原因
社会化期（3～12週齢）に十分な社会化（いろいろなものに慣らせること）が行われなかったり、ある刺激に対して強い恐怖経験を受けたりすることでおこります。
また、恐怖反応がおきている動物に対してご家族さんがなだめることで不安行動が強化されたり、叱ることで恐怖心が増していきます。
高齢になると不安傾向が高まります。
対処法
恐怖対象がわかればそれに慣らす練習をします。
症状が出ている時、なだめたり、叱ったりしないようにしましょう。
大きな音が苦手なこの場合、怖くて逃げてしまうことがあるので、
雷や花火の日は、戸締りを忘れないように。
うつ病
わんちゃんもうつ病になってしまうことがあるそうです。
うつ病を発症する原因は人間と同じように、
- ツラいことがあった
- 長期間ストレスを感じ続けた
- 厳しい環境で生活している
- 環境がガラリと変わった
- よく叱られている
- とても怖い思いをした
など、心が疲れやすいことを経験することでうつ病を発症してしまうことがあるそうです。
これも犬にきいたわけではないので、うつに似た症状と書いた方が正しいのかもしれません。
