こどもの日は、こどもが健やかに育つための予祝。
こどもの日には、菖蒲湯に入る風習もあります。
菖蒲湯に使用する菖蒲の葉は、実はお花の菖蒲とは違う植物だってご存知でしたか。

菖蒲（ショウブ）の特徴
菖蒲とは、ノハナショウブから改良されて作られた園芸品種です。
江戸時代中期には菖蒲の品種改良が始まっていたというくらい、菖蒲は古くから日本で愛されてきました。
端午の節句の頃に入るとよいと言われている菖蒲湯。お風呂に菖蒲の葉を入れて楽しむものです。

菖蒲湯に使用する菖蒲の葉は、実はお花の菖蒲とは違う植物です。
菖蒲湯に入れる菖蒲の葉は、ショウブ科ショウブ属のショウブ（Acorus calamus）という植物です。

葉の形が剣に似ていることからたくましい男の子に成長してほしい、という願いが込められるようになりました。
武士が出陣前に菖蒲湯に浸かり、無事を祈願した、という説も存在します。
お風呂に入れると菖蒲独特のさわやかな香りが立ち昇ってきます。
このさわやかな香りで邪気を払う、と信じられていました。
そのため端午の節句には厄払いと、その後の健康を願って無病息災の祈りを込め、邪気を払う香りの菖蒲湯に浸かるのです。
菖蒲湯の効能
菖蒲は古来、中国では薬草として扱われていました。
とくに根の部分は乾燥させることで、リラックス効果・血行促進・肩こり・腰痛予防・冷え性・筋肉痛・リウマチに効果を発揮する生薬「菖蒲根」「白昌」となります。
菖蒲の楽しみ方
菖蒲湯以外にも楽しみ方があるようです。
菖蒲酒
刻んだ菖蒲の根を、漬け込んだお酒のことです中国では、健胃や血行促進に効果があるとされ、端午の節句の際には欠かさず楽しまれてきました。
作る際はアクが出ないよう、30分程度の浸けで、保存はせず、飲みきってしまうよう気をつけましょう。
軒菖蒲
菖蒲とよもぎを束ねて、軒下につるしておくこと。
中国では火事を防ぐおまじないとされているそうです。
よもぎも菖蒲同様、中国では漢方として使われ、強い香りから邪気を払うとされていました。
また地方によっては、菖蒲湯によもぎを入れる地方もあるとのこと。入れる場合、よもぎには陣痛作用があることから、妊婦さんは注意が必要です。
菖蒲枕
5月5日の前日、つまり4日、寝床や枕の下に菖蒲をしいたり、菖蒲で作った枕で寝たりします。
邪気を払うと信じられ、敷いた菖蒲は、5日に菖蒲湯に使用されます。
また“勝男”とも書ける鰹や、真っすぐに伸びる筍を使った縁起のいいお料理に、彩りとして菖蒲を添えるのもおすすめです。
